A background in
communication studies provides a student with the knowledge, skills and
experience to create a career plan of his or her choice. Beyond the
preparation of specialists, communication studies is essential to
involvement in many professions and in all human interactions. Those
pursuing careers in government, social services, law, and education find
the ability to communicate vital for success.
A recent survey found
that top management regarded communication as the single most vital skill
needed in an organization. Following are examples of positions held by
recent communication studies graduates: public relations consultant,
foreign service officer, campaign director, public information officer,
market researcher, legislative assistant, advertising sales director,
speech writer, and conflict resolution mediators.
The revolution in
electronics has given added importance to the study of mass communications.
Global media capability makes us increasingly dependent upon spoken and
visual symbols for information and understanding. Students pursuing Mass
Communications major can find jobs in the areas of print and broadcast
journalism, electronic media, motion pictures, advertising, public
relations, and corporate communication.
